DIFFERENCES OF COMPLEMENT AND ADJUNCT
1. Difference in semantic structure
I have drawn between Complement PPs (which modify N) and Adjunct PPs (which modify N-bar) will enable us to provide a principled account of the structural ambiguity of phrases. Return to syntactic arguments, Complement PPs expand N into N-bar, whereas Adjunct PPs expand N-bar into N-bar. The adjunct rule is recursive; it predicts that indefinitely many Adjunct PPs can be ‘stacked’ on top of each other. The Complement rule is not recursive, it does not allow PP Complements to be stacked in this way.
2. Difference in paraphrase
The Noun Phrase can be change into Vt + O → Complement rule
Example: The writer of novels→to write novels
So, it uses complement rule. Whereas Adjunct rules, the sentence cannot be change into Vt+O.
Post modifier refers to location. → Complement rule
Example: His disgust at the wound → Complement rule
Idiom/semantic.
Example: His taking care of me.
One idiom
Therefore, it uses Complement rule.
3. Difference in distribution
Adjuncts and Complements are attached at different levels (Complements are sisters of N, and hence are attached at the N level ; whereas Adjuncts are sisters of N-bar, and hence are attached at the N-bar level), and by positing that only constituents attached at the same level can be coordinated. Complement is distribution closer of noun. Constituent optional in Noun phrase is determiner.
The optional constituents of the Noun Phrase:
S → N” + V”
N” → Det + N’ [Determiner Rule]
• New rule of Determiner: N” → (Det) + N’
N’ → N + PP [Complement Rule]
N’ → N’ + PP [Adjunct Rule]
